<image:caption>“Ross, Joni and the kids” Oil on ACP 1000mm x 750mm lindsaybrennanart.com When Ross, a long time friend of ours, rang and asked me to paint a family portrait of the love of his life Joni, and their three children, Maggi, Jack and Alex , to give to Joni as a birthday present, I was thrilled. Ross and I go back to when I first landed in Cairns in 1982, I lived with him , his brother and dad for a period when I was at a loose end, I have always been thankful for their generosity, support and kindness. We were young men running around and having a lot of fun in a tropical paradise, when Cairns was still pretty rough around the edges. Ross’s dad was in charge of the Cairns Police station so we had to rein it in a bit!! His dad Gordon was a great bloke and I spent many hours fishing and hunting with him around Cairns and up on Cape York, wild times. So all these years later to paint Ross and his lovely family was an honour and pleasure. I didn’t get it done for Joni’s birthday but the family gave it as a Christmas present and it was a hit. Ross and Joni’s families have long histories in North Queensland so painting the beers in the painting was a natural must. Painting a large family portrait and getting the likeness and character of the subjects is a real challenge but when you think you’ve nailed it, and they think you have, it’s a great relief and a big buzz. Joni and Ross were great sports and took a photo with the painting in the clothes they were wearing and Ross with beer in hand, thanks guys it was a pleasure!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Baz and 3 bikes” Oil on ACP 650mm x 750mm COMMISSION Growing up in a country town in the 70’s and attending a small primary school enabled me to share tiny classrooms with some amazing kids who have become lifelong friends. We all had big characters and life took us in many directions, and looking back it you could never predict where we would end up! There were some wild boys in our class and driving fast cars and riding motorcycles became a thing for a lot of them… Faye is one of those friends, one of the girls in our class and a lovely and fun person, and like the boys, riding motorcycles became one of her things!! When she contacted me recently and asked could I do a portrait of her husband Baz for his birthday I was wrapped, I love portraits and like painting machines. She had a pic of Baz with their Ducati 959. Faye also had pics of their normal rides, hers an 850 BMW and Baz’s a 1250 BMW, the Duke is their ‘buzz bike’ and she asked could I incorporate them, was a challenge but we got there! The painting arrived on the morning of his birthday and Faye did a reveal before a birthday dinner… Baz was blown out, which is so cool. I love painting for people, it’s a buzz and I have a few more reveals coming up. <image:caption>“Card night, and we fly out tomorrow” Oil on Aluminum Composite Panel 750mm x 520mm SOLD COMMISSION Working in a remote mine your a long way from family, but friends are all around you. If it’s a small mine like the one I worked at it gets to be like a family in the bush. After a long day and a long swing some of crew like to get together the night before the fly and have a ‘friendly’ game of Texas Hold ‘em! The stakes are high, bragging rights for the next swing, the opportunity to be the slinger of shit at the Pre-start meeting the next morning at 5.30 which can be a real show sometimes!! My mate Vivek approached me about doing a painting that would make a great memento of his time at Osborne mine, we settled on this image, the night before you fly home is a special night indeed, if you have been there you know, so an image that brings those emotions back is a great reminder indeed. In the painting are a wide variety of characters with an enormous skill and experience range, electricians, fitters, mining engineers, mechanics, power station operators, supervisors, fixed and mobile plant operators and more… Their abilities, skills and responsibilities overlap and there’s not much as a team they can’t accomplish!! I have flown, worked, drank, laughed and shared mini adventures with all of them and it was a pleasure and a great trip down memory lane when painting them. To the FIFO people who get it done, onya</image:caption>

He is a humble, caring, charming and thankfully hugely capable man and it is an honour and a pleasure to paint him. I was doing some horse paintings and I did a number of small paintings, portrait style, to improve my skills a bit. I really liked this one and have had it hanging over one of my doorways for a few years. I’ve been intending to paint more similar, so a good first step would be to let this one go and hook in and paint some more! Horses like humans, and I suppose all creatures, have their individual personality and it is a great test to reveal that on canvas, I was going for Majestic on this one!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Rennie and the boys” Oil on ACP 600mm x 600mm My good friend Claudia asked me if I could do a painting for her of her brother in law and close friend Rennie. Rennie passed recently and Claudia had a photo of her two sons, Rennie and their two dogs all on a quad bike. It was late afternoon, cane season, the Basilisk range in the background, the boys, now in their late twenties, happy as , crammed on to the bike with their uncle, the dogs looking around to see when they are going to start moving and getting wind in their fur!!! Very North Queensland, very Innisfail, very Moresby. I knew Rennie, and Claudia and her husband Michael have been huge supporters of mine for many years, so I was honored and happy to be able to reproduce the photo in oils for Claudia. It was a pleasure to paint and the family were very happy with the result. I am in between jobs at the moment and keen to paint, so if anyone is thinking about a painting they might like done let me know, I do them for a very reasonable price and enjoy the challenge of trying to create a unique special artwork for people to enjoy</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Michael “ oil on linen 16” x 20” This week with limited time I painted a figure/character study with one hue varying the values, it also known as a grisaille. The subject is Michael Fomenko, a local legend in Far North Queensland, who recently passed away. He was a very interesting character, son of a Russian diplomat who competed in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne and against his family’s wishes went to Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea to help indigenous peoples, a wonderful man and worth looking up.. my family and I often saw him in all sorts of weather running on the side of the road to his rainforest camp hidden in the hills between Cairns and Innisfail, with only what he has in painting. I may do a full painting one day as he was a resilient and tough man who really loved the rainforest</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The Cassowary, Sketch #4” Oil on canvas 200mm x 150mm The Cassowary another amazing creature in the list of Australia’s Fauna and one that is deeply entwined into the world I live in. It is the symbol for the region of Australia I live in, The Cassowary Coast, the graphic symbol for the region is an outline of a Cassowary forming rainforest, a beach and the sea, very clever and effective. They inhabit the rainforest that surrounds me and often cruise along the creek at the bottom of my block, casually picking fruit off the native trees and bushes. I encounter them often, walking through my yard, when I’m running in the rainforest, and even had one standing out the front, looking over the verandah, checking out our bedroom... A complex creature to draw or paint, but fun...hopefully do a bigger version one day!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Tommy and the Red Dust Healing” Oil on ACP 24” x 30” When I was commissioned to paint Thomas Powell I thought “I’m going to love doing this” … and I did!!! Tom is the original designer and founding director of Red Dust Healing, a specific cultural healing program that has been delivered to over 14,000 people across NSW and QLD, and rapidly spreading to the world! Tom has been recognized by the United Nations amongst others for his work. Red Dust Healing is a program for the heart not the head and is proving amazingly successful. This is more than enough reason to paint Tom, for me though the pleasure comes mainly from the fact that he has been in my life since we were young boys. He is my brother Colin’s best mate, he is a little brother to me, his family are like my family, we practically saw each other every day growing up, in the summers we swam in the river, played cricket in the back yard, played ‘catch me if you can’ till late in the evenings, both sets of parents yelling for us to come home!! In the winters we played football, fought, wrestled, got up to all sorts of mischief. As we got older not much changed and despite distance we have remained close. Red Dust Healing is formed from the love and respect he had for his dad Noel, like my dad back in the day an Earth-Moving contractor. The memories of his dad are tied tightly to the red dust of NSW and the grader , a 12G Cat, his dad operated. I loved his mum and dad they were cool and always great to me. Recently I was with my dad going through his photo albums, mainly black and white pics of his earth moving days and there was Noel on his grader… so I put it in the painting, and if you look close, Tom and his dad are in the cabin!! Tom is a beautiful man, smart, a wonderful athlete in his day and so caring. Growing up together was a ball, he was asked once was there much antagonism between indigenous and white, he replied “ we were all pretty colour blind back there “, says it all, very Tom!!! And both Tom and Col loved the painting. Hope you like it</image:caption>

I listen to all sorts of music from blues to rock, grunge to disco!! There are gems in all styles, but one group was particularly good to listen to, and that was Aussie hip hop legends the Hill Top Hoods Painting away I really listened to their lyrics, melodies and beat, unreal!! I wanted to paint some figures so I picked the Hoods!! They hold dear the Australian vernacular and use it to the max, their stories are great and sung with fantastic imagery!. This painting shows them singing ‘Ghost ‘ with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, classic , great fun to paint</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Starman” Oil on ACP 18” x 24” 5 years ago David Bowie returned to the stars... if you ever want inspiration for imagination and creativity look to this mans life! He constantly pushed boundaries, questioned what was accepted and re-invented himself. Always seeking out and surrounding himself with the most adventurous people in music, art and fashion he left us with a legacy they will be hard to top. As a person who works in a very non arty environment I sometimes struggle letting go and giving my creative side enough...put on some David Bowie and straight away I’m starting to loosen up!! This is my tribute to him, Starman...’there’s a Starman waiting in the sky , he’d like to come and meet us, but he thinks he’d blow our minds’...and he did!! This is him, as Ziggy, wearing the Kansai Yamamoto woodland creature outfit at Hammersmith Odeon, London show, 1973, I put him floating from Mars, heading to Earth, a starman, looking for the Spiders!! Not of this Earth, its how his songs, music and appearance made me feel as a teenager back then, and still does... one cool dude</image:caption>

I’m no bodybuilder but I have put some hours in at the gym. I love the challenge, the physical and mental test, the feeling of accomplishment when you get through your sets, and the strength and confidence you get from being consistent and committed. I wanted to do a painting, not of flexing and mirrors, shiny chrome, skin tight Lycra or bright lights! I wanted to show the individual challenge, the narrowed focus of you and the rep, how the amount of weight or surrounds don’t matter, it’s about form and getting through your sets, pushing through that last rep!! And who else to show it but the man himself, on his own, basement gym, barefoot and trackie daks. The man who changed the perception of lifting weights and bodybuilding forever. Painted in the Chiaroscuro style to empathize the moment!</image:caption>

Bit hard when you grow up in the bush That love for Marvel and DC comics has passed on to my sons, but my wife Trish not so much... till now!! Guardians of the Galaxy and Groot has changed that!! This is the first Marvel Superhero I have ever painted, there ya go Hope you like it Trish loves Baby Groot, and I love Trish..Groots cool!! Here’s my painting of Baby Groot for her. It hangs in the hallway near our bedroom so she sees him in the morning and has a smile and the same when she goes to bed, that makes me smile, as an artist , to me that’s what it’s about!!</image:caption>

I started it by doing a rough sketch in a spare piece of canvas board 10 years ago and decided to add the background and colour this week. His drawing and painting skills were second to none and a master of his genre, I idolized him growing up and seeing his work gave me a strong desire to draw and paint!! Not everyone’s cup of tea but I love this shit I don’t paint like Frank, but I paint because of Frank!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Hand Plant” Oil on ACP 24” x 18” AVAILABLE IN ORIGINALS FOR SALE AND IN PRINTS When we were kids back in the Seventies, like kids of today we were always looking for the next thing, the latest craze, something to test out your youthful daredevil skills on. News and exposure came a little slower then but even in the outback country towns a movement like skateboarding eventually made its way to the youth!! The boards and purpose built skate parks are a far cry from the basic setups we had, even in the fanciest hangouts then. Roads , supermarket car parks, school grounds, whatever had a smooth surface was the go. No helmets, padding, guards, wooden boards etc...scary shit. For me, just one footing along was a test, let alone doing tricks. We saw California kids on tv and movies, doing amazing things and having the coolest time, they had cool clothes, great music and lived in what seemed like an endless summer. I never forgot those times and images, when you hit the ground skating it hurt... sometimes really bad!! So when you see the guys and girls of today performing the aerial stunts they do you can only be amazed, because if they get it wrong, that shit hurts!! This is a bit of a tribute to those times and the skaters of today, hand planting... holy shit!! Cheers</image:caption>

<image:caption>“High Wire” Oil on canvas PRINTS AVAILABLE 18” x 26” I have wanted to do a female figurative piece for awhile now, wanted to do something that would capture some of the spirit of women. Like most men, the women in my life have all had different personalities, but I think they all had similar strengths. My nans, my mum, Trish my wife, my sister and my friends have all influenced me and I have seen their qualities shine through many times. This painting was inspired by all these women, especially Trish and her mates who were some of the first women working in the male dominated arena of the mining industry. I worked with Trish and many of these women over the years, and still do. They were clever, resilient, reliable, always a pleasure to work with and they went hard. Aside from being moms, wives, sisters they hold their own in any situation. So this is the first image I have come up with to try and portray some of this qualities!!</image:caption>

I had met Terry Lamb once l, when a mate of mine was playing for the Bulldogs, they had won the Grand final the year before and were a great bunch of guys. Liam told me the T-shirt was part of the Bloke in a Bar franchise, dudes who do a podcast on sports stories, characters and associated stuff like punting… The Punters and Dribblers!! They market their own beer, a nice drop too, and they are as funny as, and pretty much on the money, with a lot of current league identities linked with them, all great stuff. Liam was after something for his Bar, decoration so I did this painting of his Punters and Dribblers hat, his wallet and keys …and added a Baa Baa (Terry Lamb)pic, and frame to set it off!! He loved it, so get on board</image:caption>

When I got back into painting I did a heap of cricket paintings of my favorite players, this one is of Brett Lee, he represented Australia for many years and sending down 150kph rockets. To face a cricket ball at this pace from 22 yards would be a very scary experience indeed I gave it to a mate whose wife was a huge Brett Lee fan( lot of ladies were) and he gave it to her for her birthday, she reckons best present she ever got and the next best thing to the real thing!! Cheers to all the cricket fans</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The Don” 8” x “10 Oil ACP My No.3, the Don!!, What can I say, the man is the standard that all batsmen are compared to. His efforts and batting feats captured the heart and imagination of a country in a time of great upheaval. The whole cricket world was in awe of his talent, his ongoing legacy has seen Australian cricket prosper and at times conquer all comers. I remember as a boy seeing old film of him practicing hitting a golf ball up against a tank stand using a cricket stump!! He is not my Captain but undeniably the greatest batsman in the side and a wonderful captain as well. Coming in at first drop, batting with one of the openers I picked, would give any bowling attack a whole bucket of concern</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Master Blaster” Oil on ACP 8” x 10” My No.4, Viv Richards, the Master Blaster!! my favorite cricketer of all, the coolest cricketer of all time!! I watched him play in the 70’s, amazing, I saw him pick up a ball on the boundary at the SCG, and in one movement threw it flat straight over the stumps and never lost his stride When he came out to bat everyone was so nervous but smiling because they new the ‘man’ was at the crease and he didn’t disappoint. Some said he was arrogant, but it looked to me when he hit the ball and didn’t bother running he knew, as did everybody, that it would crash into the fence or go clean over it!! The King if the Caribbean, he never forgot his humble beginnings and did everything he could to repay the people who helped him achieve his goals! What a legend</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Gilly” Oil on ACP 10” x 8” My No.7 and Wicket Keeper!! I loved Rodney Marsh back in the 70’s and early 80’s, watched him keep to Lillee and Thompson so he was almost the walk up for wicket keeper in my side... but then I watched Adam Gilchrist completely re-define the role of keeper in modern cricket, his figures batting anywhere are outstanding and his glovemanship was second to none. I lost count of the number of times he turned a game on its head and either win the game or set it up for the Aussies!! He always showed the utmost in sportsmanship, more than once walking when he wasn’t given out, loved and admired across the world and a great face of such character, really fun to paint.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Warnie” Oil on ACP 10” x 8” My No. 8, first man up in my bowling lineup, Shane Warne. The best spinner ever, leggie or offie, what a legend!! Cricketer, poker player, partner of superstars, what a character. The cricket world turned in its axis the day Warnie bowled Mike Gatting at Old Trafford, during the 1st Test in 1993. Warne had played 11 tests before that day,and there were strong indications that his bowling would be something special. Pretty much from that day on spin bowling took on a whole new emphasis, no longer the guys who gave the pace bowlers a spell and jagged a couple of wickets, no longer the quickest way for a batsman to get from 60 to 100, as famously quoted by Ian Chappell He stayed true to his character and nature, which I think was a major factor in his success but may have impeded his chances to captain his country as his cricket knowledge is second to few!! I painted this reference because I thought it captured a bit of that character</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The boy from Narromine “ Oil on ACP 10” x 8” My No. 9, Glenn McGrath, first of my pace attack, one of the best bowlers of all time, no question!! Being a Narromine boy he was an easy pick, in the late 70’when I was 19 or 20 I opened the bowling for a team called Backwater, a team in the local Narromine comp with a long and proud history, the senior players were experienced and highly regarded in country cricket. As a bowler they hammered you about bowling line and length, and on off stump, a technique that paid dividends. 10 or so years later Glenn, being a farm boy from that area, played for the same team, and they didn’t think he was good enough, They were a bit up themselves, probably thought he would show them up!! Anyway he played a social game in Parkes, NSW, got noticed by Steve Rixon and headed to the big smoke, and the rest is history. Backwaters loss Australia’s gain</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Smithy” Oil on ACP 8” x 10” My No.2, second opener, Steve Smith, a legend and possibly one of the best batsman since Bradman, and the records are starting to show that!! He often comes in an over or two after the first ball is bowled and very rarely falters against the opening quicks! I found when looking for a reference pic that he looked different in every one, like his batting and personality a bit of an enigma. I tried to capture this in the style and technique of his portrait. He and Virat Kholi attended the Australian cricket Academy together as young fellas and are close friends, as evidenced by Kholi going up to the crowd in the latest test series and asking them to respect his friend, a gesture that was appreciated greatly by Smithy!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“ King Kholi” Oil on ACP 10” x 8” I wanted to paint a series of small, quick portraits to experiment, loosen up and improve my portrait painting skills. Limiting the time to finish each one to a couple of sittings was a challenge but a good way to trust my eye and process. I decided to pick my ultimate cricket team, for cricket fans this is a challenge, everyone has an opinion, for non fans , probably as boring as. Here is my No.1, Virat Kholi, facing the first ball, if he lasts the first 2 overs he’ll hit 100!! Had to be in there somewhere so opening is it</image:caption>

<image:caption>“ Jeffrey and DK” Oil on ACP 16” x 10” My No.10 and 11, Lillee and Thompson, arguably the best opening attack of all time!! I watched Jeff Thompson in his prime at the SCG, side on, at pitch level...he ran in, slung the ball, the batsmen aimlessly waved his bat, and the ball hits Rodney Marshe’s gloves, with an audible crack 20 meters back,at full leap and at full stretch!! I didn’t even see the ball... 160kph, unreal. They destroyed the poms, crashed and bashed a young West Indies side, that included a young Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd and other greats. After that, Clive Lloyd went back to the West Indies and with Richards searched the Caribbean for raw big super fast bowlers, then honed them into a combo that could match Lillee and Thommo... they did, went on to dominate world cricket for the next 20 years!! And Dennis Lillee, the best bowler I have ever seen, a cliche, but Poetry in Motion, as a young cricketer all I wanted to do is bowl like Dennis, he literally wrote the book on fast bowling, his rhythm was amazing. After coming back from a predicted early career ending back injury, he redesigned his bowling action and came back to be the premier fast bowler for years!! I painted the boys together, what a pair, golden years of cricket !!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Chappelli” Oil on ACP 8” x 10” My No.5 and Captain, Ian Chappell. Love him or hate, him he’s the dude to captain my ultimate team. There were so many good captains Alan Border, Ponting, Taylor, Steve Waugh,... but all of em looked up to the guy I picked, he was one of the few captains who had a 3/1 win ratio and batting at #3 hit 35 50+ scores, second only to Ponting, Australia had lost 9 tests straight when he took over, then won the next 5!!took no shit, anyone who played for him would walk into a fire if he asked...and back in the 70’s I thought he was as cool as!! He and Kerry Packer changed the face of cricket forever, and cricketers pay packets, they say all cricketers should bow when Ian Chappell walks in the room!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Beefy” Oil on ACP 8” x 10” My No.6 and all rounder, Ian Botham! 6 foot 2”, 100 odd kg of cricketing genius. Bat, bowl, field, captain and generally shit stir and win, this man had it all. In 1981 I watched Beefy single handily destroy the Aussies in the 4th Test. The Aussies needed 151 to win the match and were 5 for 105, looking to do it easy, then Botham took 5 wickets for 1 run off 28 balls, couldn’t believe it, and didn’t he give it to the Aussies. He is a real larrikan and hard as it is to say one of the greatest all rounders of all time!! He and Viv Richards were best mates and played together for years at Somerset!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Tacking Point Lighthouse” Oil on ACP 14” x 11” FOR SALE I visit Mum and Dad in beautiful Port Macquarie as often as I can, and it’s always a great time. Each time I get to know the area a little better and there is a lot to see. Tacking Point was names by Matthew Flinders in 1802 and a lighthouse was built there in 1879 after more than 20 ships were wrecked in the area! It is located about 8 kilometers south of Port Macquarie on a rocky headland. It is the 13th oldest lighthouse in the country and is only 8 meters high due to the elevation of its location at Tacking Point. It is made of rendered brick painted stark white which adds to its landmark quality. The lighthouse originally had a keepers cottage next to it and the foundations are still visible. It is a popular spot for locals and visitors and winding road to it really invites you to go and visit the lighthouse. I have added the looming storm to show the importance of the lighthouse to sea traffic and a couple of local Glossy Black Cockatoos getting ready to head for the hills.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Resting Place” Oil on ACP 18” x 24” When it’s 47C ( 117F) in outback north west Qld, finding a bit of shade is a priority. I came across this old truck underneath a couple of Gidgee trees( Stinking Wattle, Acacia cambagei) about 40k from the mine I work at, on Pathungra Station. Not an environment for the feint hearted the temperatures can go from near 50C in the summer to below zero in the winter. As I pulled up a heap of Roo’s came bounding out in all directions, it’s amazing they survive and thrive out there and there’s buggerall to survive on!! There’s probably a pretty cool story to the old truck, maybe dragged there to be fixed, unsuccessfully, and there it stayed! The natural inhabitants seem to be able to outlast the man made visitors in this seemingly barren part of the country, birds, native animals, cattle, camels and reptiles thrive though and make it a place that can be worth experiencing. Here’s the painting I did to try and capture this corner of the Aussie Outback.</image:caption>

Aussies are so lucky to live in a country that has Koalas, and Roos, and emus and platypus.. to name a few. This painting is my interpretation of a popular Koala image, I did a quick sketch of it on a transformer and posted it previously, this is the colored in version. The fauna and flora of our great land has taken a big hit recently and it is so sad, to think of these creatures in fear and pain.. and dying is heartbreaking, I painted this at work, with a fair bit of feeling,.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The Drover, off to town in his favorite Red shirt” Oil on canvas 900mm x 1000mm Painting trees can be a challenge, but an enjoyable one, having lived in the outback, on the coast and in the tropics, and having seen the variety and types of trees it is staggering!! The good thing about trees is that portraying them generally a subjective thing. You don’t have to paint every leaf and limb to represent them, you can be loose with form and colour, to a degree! Most artists develop a style and technique for painting trees, to make them look and feel the best for their work. I find every time I paint a tree it sort of designates to me how to paint it, an ongoing learning experience. In this painting I wanted to paint some Hans Heysen type trees, concentrating on the light and lost edges. Staying as loose as possible on the trees and giving old mate a red shirt to balance the overload of green!! It’s a big painting, almost 1 meter x 1 meter and looks great on the wall.</image:caption>

She sent me an image and I did my interpretation of it. I really enjoy painting sunsets and sunrises but they do have their challenges!! The scene really reminded me of the many sunsets and sunrises I had encountered on the West coast of Queensland when we lived in Weipa. That’s the look I went for, while I was painting it I thought a lot about Weipa and the Cape and it’s beauty, we saw so many great endings to days, that we started to take them for granted… you’d be out throwing a cast net on sunset and look up and catch the last rays of the day, pause a minute, watch the fireball descend into the sparkling sea, extinguishing the light and extraordinary colours as it went!! Madi and her sister Brittany loved it, so that was great, and hopefully their Mum, who lives in Weipa does too.</image:caption>

It had been unseasonably dry for this time, of year ,( till this week!!), which has produced some amazing sunsets due to the dust and smoke. My wife and I went went with friends on a Snapping Tours Sunset cruise (see the odd crocodile)on the Johnstone river (highly recommended) the sunset was a highlight and this is a painting I did of the view coming back to Innisfail that evening. I did very little drafting, just hooked in and tried to capture the colours and feeling of the sunset, big brush strokes and plenty of colour using my pics as a reference. The dot in the middle of the picture is Xmas lights on the water tower!</image:caption>

Rangi was trailing me, 30 meters or so behind when I heard something off in the bush, I turned around, Rangi was sniffing around the edges of the forest below me, when I saw the leaves and branches behind him move and a large, fully grown Cassowary burst out of the forest, meters behind my dog, then hot in its heels, two half meter high chicks high-tailing after it!! They were across the dirt road in seconds, disappearing into the thick rainforest with barely a sound!! I was wide eyed and looked down at Rangi, he was still happily sniffing away, oblivious to the actions that had taken place mere meters behind him. When you look at a Cassowary, see their shape and colours, designed for the rainforest, wedge on the top of the head, long strong neck, raked body with tough black feathers, strong legs and feet to push through vines etc and bright colours on the back of the neck to remain visible to the following chicks or birds. Did this painting not long after that adventure!!</image:caption>

When we got our licenses some got into bikes, some cars and some both. Easy Rider was a big movie back then and sometimes riding the country backroads on old Honda 100’s we would see ourselves as the boys in the movie, wind in our hair, cruising, having a ball. I went the car route, but a lot of the boys went the bike road and are still rolling today. I have always loved the choppers and the chrome, especially the Easy Rider bikes and have always wanted to do a painting of them. Wanted to give it an Aussie flavour so I have painted a couple of my lifelong mates, Harley riders for life, Brian and Steven on the bikes, cruising past the big rock!!</image:caption>

It’s called Bennelong Point, the sail boat I believe is ‘The Young Endeavor ‘, I watched it leave its moorings at the Quay and I ran along the old stone walkway dodging people to get the shot I wanted, it was a magic day and I loved painting this work as the Opera House holds so much significance to me as it does for all Aussies!! hope you like it, I loved painting it</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Near the Lighthouse, Port Macquarie” Oil on panel 10” x 20” To be able to sit with your dad, in a quiet and comfortable environment, and paint the hours away is a rare and special treat, and add to that having your mum bringing cups of tea and praise is like cream on the cake!! I sat with dad, we both paint in oils, and worked on our paintings, he on a canvas board and myself painting on Aluminium Composite Panel prepped with an oil ground. He uses turps to apply thin blocking in layers, and to wash his brushes, and refined linseed oil as the medium for the thicker oil layers. I don’t use turps, minimal linseed oil as the medium, clean my brushes with paper towels and the paint on my palette! At the end I use soapy water to clean up! Our colour palette is very similar, but how we mix and apply the paint is quite different, really interesting when it’s happening! He has been painting for over 60 years and developed tried and true techniques, processes and a style that has seen him become a well known and accomplished artist. My own process is usually the same but my techniques, application and interpretation are dynamic and evolving, mainly due to the influences of the internet and the access you can have to so many great artists from Australia and around the world. As he says ”there’s a lot of ways to skin a sheep son” so in that short painting period, that little snapshot of time a lot of information passed between us, and not only about art!! This is the painting I did in that session, it will remain special</image:caption>

I heard about it years ago and when a fellow artist Lew Brennan posted a photo by Mozz , when he was in New York. <image:caption>“Jim Jim Falls, Heaven on Earth “ Oil on canvas panel Australia, a land of such varied landscapes, it is such a great challenge to mix the colours to try and capture them and do the scenes justice. One of my favorite Australian photographers is Peter Jarver, sadly no longer with us, his images resonate so strongly with me. I have lived in the north of Australia for many years and I have yet to see any one capture the feel and atmosphere of the Tropics like he did. I look at his photos and can almost feel the humidity, smell the lush rainforest, hear the sounds of the northern scrub! I have always loved his image of Jim Jim Falls, he called the place ‘Heaven on Earth’ I haven’t previously had the skills to do an interpretation of this image, with the limited palette I use,but thought I’d give it a go. This is the painting I created from one of those pics, I really wanted to paint a Paris scene as Paris during the 1800’s produced the artists and paintings that have, and still do heavily influence myself and the current artists I look to for inspiration and guidance. The Impressionist’s, but more so the Realism movement led by Gustave Courbet and including Carolus Duran is a style and technique that I aspire to and try to emulate in my own way, and all these guys were in Paris at the same time!! <image:caption>“Evening, on the corner of Rue “UBI BENE IBI PATRIA” Oil on ACP 1100mm x 700mm This is a bit of a story… ‘Ubi Bene Ibi Patria’, the Latin inscription on the front of the Monument that stands on the Fitzgerald Esplanade on bank of the Johnstone River , Innisfail. Loosely interpreted to “ Where one is content, there is one’s homeland “ Like every thing about the statue standing at the junction of Innisfail it has so much meaning and thought behind it! In 1959 the Queensland Government suggested communities commemorate the centenary of separation from NSW with a structure of permanent nature. Around their regular Saturday morning beers a group of Italian locals headed by Dr Rigano came up with the idea of a statue to honor the pioneers of the Sugar Industry, an industry that was the heart and soul of the region. Many photos of the sugar industry were gathered and sent to Sydney artist Mr Lamberto Yonna, who suggested the statue of a cane cutter as a symbol of the Sugar industry. He did many sketches and the final sketch, after it was approved was sent to Carrra in Italy, a city and province famous for its marble and sculptors. Professor Renato Berratta, an instructor and a man famous across Italy and France, came up with the successful design and was delighted to sculpt it. It cost 5 thousand pounds in 1959, so probably a quarter of a mill now!! Shipped in 32 crates and assembled by a migrant artisan , Mr Pietro Bertolani, recommended personally by Prof Berretta, who had only been in Australia for 2 months! The monument is a work of art by any standard. On the 4.3 meter monument sits a live size cane cutter, his physique anatomically perfect and showing the strength and toughness needed to cut cane, wearing a basic hat and a pair of shorts grabbing a stool of cane, and swinging his legendary cane knife!! Around the level below are reliefs of cane cutters working in the fields. The fountain outlets are water bags, copies of the bags the cutters carried. Dolphins and sea creatures from the reef are on the bottom level. There are cane knives, files and water bags on the fence. The fence depicts Badilla cane stalks, and the rails on the top are exact replicas of the rail gauge and profile used by the sugar mill trains in the area!! The inscriptions on and around the monument pay tribute to the pioneers of the Sugar industry, in English and Italian, very unique! A wonderful example of art and community, a pleasure to paint, and a challenge to paint a recognized and amazing piece of art and spirit!!</image:caption>

I have painted it a number of times trying to capture it as I see and feel it. Often it is portrayed on canvas as quite ethereal and romantic..while beautiful and scenic it can also be a harsh environment. When the rain stops for a while and there are no clouds, on a winters day in the tropics the sky seems to go on forever and the days are beautiful, you don’t want the days to end! It is a time of year in the Tropics when the heat and humidity become almost unbearable, each day it builds and threatens to rain, but slides away. Then as if it’s all to much, the air gets thick with moisture, the clouds darken the landscape, all seems to go deathly still, and then. .everything lightens up, the sky, the trees, the water take on a luminescent hue, and then.. crack the bolt, followed immediately by the thunderclap, and then the air goes cold and down comes the torrential rain!! it’s truly a show of nature’s power and beauty!! They often talked fondly about their time as wringers and after a few beers would get quite animated telling their stories, pretty cool. I used to nod and laugh and enjoy the yarns, but it never really sunk in till the Rodeo came to town, then they put on a show!! When I saw them done up in their clobber, excited and focused it was like they were different people, they had a go at every type of event, it was amazing to see.. they hooked right in..were so good, fully in the zone and in command!! And had a ball!! In this little painting I tried to capture a bit of the feel of an Aussie stockman.I used a setting very similar to the country around the mine I work at in Northwest Queensland, wanted to see if the idea would look ok for a bigger painting..</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The Shark “ Oil on canvas “12 x 16” This painting is a composition that was inspired by two people, a old friend of mine John Mills from the Torres Strait, and Frank Frazetta the Fantasy painter master! John was a Pearl diver and Pearling Lugger Captain during the 1960’s and 70’s, while we were working in Weipa he told me many stories of his Pearling days, truly amazing.. great history of a wonderfully unique part of our country. I asked him if he ever found lost treasure, he said “ No...but I saw a lot of sharks Bulla!!” From that time I have wanted to do a painting of Suit Divers..and using Frank Frazetta as an influence for the narrative I came up with this composition, love painting this type of stuff and hope to do more!!</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Mount Sonder and a couple of Wedgies” Oil on ACP 600mm x 450mm As a boy I can remember seeing paintings done by Albert Namatjira, and indigenous water colour artist of amazing skills. His paintings of the MacDonnell Ranges, and it’s surrounds in Central Australia were full of rich colour and gave a glimpse of the wide spaces and tranquility of the red center. He was a prolific painter and a mentor to many indigenous artist of the time, starting his own school of artists in the outback, The Hermannsburg school. This is my painting of Mount Sonder, a subject often portrayed in Namatjira’s work, as it was close to his home.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“ A Few Beers in Amsterdam “ Oil on linen, 16” x 20” Recently my son Liam was in Europe catching up with friends, he took some nice photos and I have composed a few paintings from them. The play of light and the effect on the hues seems different to that in OZ He was heading out for a beer and took this shot, I saw it and thought, nice spot for a beer! So I painted it...was a bit tougher than I thought and I had to go down a few more brush sizes and take longer then usual, to get the depth, and show all the various components. I wanted to capture the activity along the canal, the shade on the buildings from the trees and of course the canal and its little boats…and the groovy beer garden!! Hope you like it</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Way Out West, Rig 29” Oil on ACP 400mm x 500mm Sometimes a song can resonate with you, it may not change your life but it may influence your thinking in some direction! I was recently in Toowoomba with my son Liam and he took me to the head office of Easternwell, a drilling and camp management company working in the Oil and Gas sector. Lining the walls of their rather impressive headquarters were photos from the field of their people, drill rigs and camps from all over Australia, many of these locations very remote. The images were mainly supplied by the employees of Easternwell and were fantastic. Depicting parts of Australia rarely seen and in its rawest beauty, drill rigs with sunrises, sunsets, fires, deserts, and various bush. The drill rigs reminded me of a song I really liked when I was a boy, called “Way out west” by an Aussie band the Dingoes, the song gave me an incredible sense and desire to go and work somewhere completely different and wild, not nine to five, remote and untamed, a place to prove yourself!! I never forgot it and a few years later I headed North( and slightly west) to seek my fortune, my ‘way out west’ I got Liam to send me some of the images so I could do a painting, I really like the contrast of the abstraction of the bush, sky and nature offset against the engineered and sleek colours and lines of the drill rigs. The rigs and camps are like a little island on the inland sea! To the people who work these rigs and camps, I get it, it’s not just money, (big help though) its a life, it gets in your blood!! To everyone else, hope you like it, it’s a big beautiful country with a lot going on</image:caption>
